CO2 lasers work by penetrating the skin and creating microscopic areas of thermal damage. The skin then heals, forming new collagen and healthy skin cells. The procedure usually takes about 45 minutes and can feel like a prickly burning sensation. After the procedure, the skin will feel hot for up to 24 hours. A barrier cream is applied to protect the skin from infection and dehydration. The number of treatment sessions required depends on the desired results, but typically ranges from 3–6 sessions. Each treatment session should be spaced at least 4 weeks apart, and the skin can take up to 4 weeks to heal.
