Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive procedure that destroys unwanted tissue by applying extreme cold in a controlled way. It is commonly used to treat various skin lesions such as warts, skin tags, and others. Freezing tissue rapidly to temperatures of -27°C or lower causes cryonecrosis in benign human tissues. However, because of the body’s natural warmth, the treatment typically requires temperatures around -64°C to be effective.

Nitrous oxide freezes targeted cells quickly but is not cold enough to harm surrounding healthy tissue. It operates at -89°C, which is the lowest temperature that avoids collateral tissue damage. In contrast, liquid nitrogen reaches -196°C, posing a much higher risk of damaging nearby healthy tissue.
