Intramuscular Injections
Intramuscular (IM) injections deliver medication deep into muscle tissue. This route provides faster absorption than subcutaneous injections due to greater blood supply in muscles.
Common IM injection sites include:
- Vastus lateralis (thigh) - preferred site for infants and adults
- Ventrogluteal (hip) - safest site for adults and children
- Deltoid (upper arm) - convenient for small volume injections
- Dorsogluteal (buttock) - less preferred due to proximity to sciatic nerve
When administering IM injections:
- Use appropriate needle length (typically 1-1.5 inches)
- Insert at 90-degree angle
- Aspirate slightly before injection to ensure needle isn't in a blood vessel
- Inject medication slowly (about 10 seconds per mL)
- Apply gentle pressure after withdrawing needle
IM injections are suitable for medications like vaccines, antibiotics, hormones, and pain relievers that require rapid absorption or are irritating to subcutaneous tissue.
